Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson the students will be better able to review and practice gerunds vs infinitives in the context of discussing being famous.

Subsidiary Aims

  • 1. Ss will learn/review some new vocabulary related to fame.
  • 2. Ss will develop their speaking skills by discussing famous people and their lives.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Set-up: Ask learners to discuss their favorite quotes from a famous person. Task: Nominate 2 or 3 Ss to share their answers. Transition: Introduce the topic of the lesson, relating it to talking about fame.

Exposure (8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Set-up: Provide learners with the text from page 88 of the SB. Task: Students do Exercise 1 as a gist task, reading for general understanding. Feedback: Discuss the main ideas of the text as a class. Transition: Explain that they will now do an intensive reading task to identify specific language structures.

Highlighting (3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Set-up: Highlight examples of gerunds and infinitives in the text. Task: Ask students to identify and underline gerunds and infinitives. Feedback: Confirm correct answers. Transition: Prepare for clarification of language forms.

Clarification (10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Set-up: Use Canva Slides to present Meaning, Form, and Pronunciation of gerunds and infinitives. Task: Elicit MFP from students and clarify any questions. Feedback: Check understanding with concept checking questions. Transition: Prepare students for controlled practice of the language.

Controlled Practice (10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Set-up: Show the Ss the exercise 1. Task: Students complete the practice individually, then check in pairs via breakout rooms (BORs). Feedback: OCFB (Open Class Feedback) to review answers and clarify any doubts. Transition: Introduce the freer practice activity.

Free Practice (10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Set-up: Give Ss a task where they create sentences or short paragraphs using gerunds and infinitives. Task: Students work in pairs or groups to complete the task. Feedback: Monitor and provide feedback on language use. OCFB. Transition: Conduct Feedback and DEC.
