Materials

Abc MAT1: Case Studies Presentation
Abc Doc: Case Studies 1&2
Abc Doc: Before & After Research
Abc Handout 1

Main Aims

  • To provide students with a good example of a case study to help them improve their research skills

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a presentation in the context of problems and solutions related to specific SDGs.
  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about violence against women and energy efficiency in the context of case studies on Sustainable Development Goals

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher presents MAT 1/Slide 1 and shows the definition of "case study". T tries to elicit the answer and if students cannot come up with an answer, T clicks on the same slide and displays options asking students to choose two words from the box. After getting the answer, students are asked to discuss a question with their partners and find a real-life situation which requires a case study (expected answers: war, earthquake, hunger, domestic violence, energy efficiency, etc.)

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and identify key details in a case study

T moves on with MAT 1/Slide 2 and explains students that they are going to read examples of case studies. Students go to Google Classroom to reach file named "Case Studies 1&2". T assigns the case study 1 to groups 1, 2 & 3 and case study 2 to groups 2, 4 & 6. They are asked to take notes and identify 3 most important details in the studies. After reading, they share their notes and findings with their group members in order to check their comprehension as a group. T tells students to find a partner from another group which read the other case study. They explain their case studies to each other. T displays Slide 3 and students discuss three questions related to the studies. T ask volunteers their answers and gives feedback.

Task (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice doing research on case studies

T continues with Slide 4 and explains students that they are going to do research about the places that had a similar problem to the problem in their case studies (1: violence against women, 2: poverty/energy efficiency). Students go to Google Classroom to reach the link for case studies published by United Nations. Slide 4 shows the questions they need to be able to answer about their case studies. Students take their notes on the document named "Before & After Research" on Google Classroom.

Report (13-15 minutes) • To allow students to report on their findings from their case studies through presentation

After completing the document with their pre-assigned groups, they come together with another group to make a presentation. Each person in the group should present for around 1.30-2 minutes (12 mins in total). While listening to the other group, each student will take notes on the document named Handout1. Finally, discussion questions on Slide 6 are going to be discussed as a whole class.
