Materials

Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of writing an advice leaflet in the context of travel.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice reading for gist in the context of travel.
  • To develop students’ understanding of the meaning, form, and appropriacy of phrases to give advice in the context of travel.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T. shares slide #1 with three questions: Do you know what solo travel is? Have you ever traveled solo? If yes, what was it like? / If you no, would you like to try? T. provides a demonstration. T. nominates 2 Ss. to share their ideas.

Exposure (3-3 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading.

T. shares a Google form and asks Ss. to read the text and choose the best summary. T. sets the time 2 mins. OCF.

Language focus (6-8 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

T. draws Ss' attention to the text again (slide #3) and confirms the topic, the structure, the audience, and the style of the text. S. answer the questions. T. shows slide #4 with useful vocabulary and confirms the meaning and the form asking CCQs where necessary (check form only with semi-fixed phrases).

Preparation/Planning (2-2 minutes) • To give Ss thinking and note-taking time to organise their ideas for the subsequent task.

T. shares slide #5 and tells Ss to think about 4-5 pieces of advice they'd give to a tourist who has never been to their hometown. T. tells them to take some notes on what they want to write about

Productive Task(s) (15-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

T. sets the time (15 minutes). Ss. write.

Publishing (5-7 minutes) • To provide practice in skimming and reading for details; to promote interest in what other Ss have written.

T. tells Ss. to exchange their texts and review them answering the questions: Is it structured/organized well? Is there an introduction? Are there any paragraphs? Is it easy to read? Are there many errors? Would you travel to these places?

Feedback and Error Correction (6-7 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

T. gives content feedback. Ss shares some ideas. T. provides DEC.
