Procedure (33-46 minutes)
Introduce the saying "You don't have to be crazy to work here... But it helps!" Ask them -What is the meaning of the saying? (ask to translate into L1 if necessary) -What kind of jobs do you think it describes? - discuss with your partners Elicit ideas from 2-3 students Write names on the board and jobs they do - Jonnie, Erica and Sam Give instructions: Listen to three people talking about their jobs. Choose where they work (write on the board) Jonnie - food industry/IT Erica - a fashion magazine/a clothes shop Sam - in an office/from home Offer SS to compare their answers. Open-class check
All these peaople have different working conditions (point to the glossary on the board). Choose the correct options to describe them. When you finish, compare with your partners. (Students do the task.) Now listen and check.
IWhen you work for a company you have to follow rules. You have something ... (draw a table) necessary I not necessary I permitted I not permited ... to do. By the means of CCQ complete the table - I have to wear uniform (write HAVE TO). What about Jonnie? (has to - write in the table)
Organise students into pairs/groups of three, ask them to complete the sentences with Mustn't/needn't/have to/can - exercises in the book. Monitor their work. Open-class check.
There are names of professions fixed on the walls around the classroom. Students have a list of phrases: be fit, be good at maths, have degree etc They write sentences with have/doesn't have to using this phrases or their own ideas.
Students think of three people they know with different jobs and write similar sentences to the those in the previous exercise. They tell a partner about each person.
