Description

In this lesson, adult students learn to skim, scan and take risks to make wild guesses. First, they are got to reflect on their sleeping patterns, then predict what they are going to read, complete the Reading puzzles together and analyze some parts used for advertising and, finally, discover to what extent they cover up the truth.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and deduction reading practice using a text about Wish you had more time?Add 8 hours to your day! in the context of Advertisement

  • To provide fluency in the context of advertisement

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. Greet 2. Say how many hours you usually sleep and ask what about them (their sleep pattern)

Pre-Reading/Listening (2-3 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1. Hand out the sentences starting with dots (the sentences at the end of the text) 2. Get them guess what the title and what they expect to read (in their group(s)) for almost one minute 3. Play the audio file to help them make a guess

While-Reading/Listening #1 (3-4 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

1.Hand out the paper pieces 2. Ask them to make the text with the pieces in their group(s) (about one minute) 3. Check and give feedback

While-Reading/Listening #2 (2-3 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

1. Ask them how advertisers usually advertise or what words and tricks they use to draw attentions (First individually for one minute and then in group(s) for 30 seconds)

Post-Reading/Listening (2-3 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

1.Ask to think and answer the questions first individually and then in group(s), each for one minute: Do you believe/ Can you trust what is written in the text? Why? How can we decide if the advertisement is true or reliable? Or: What would it be like if the advertisement were true? how would your life would be changes? What kind of special advertisement have ever faced? ... 2. Check and give feedback
