Materials

Main Aims

  • To introduce and practice modals of deduction (present and past) in the context of the conversation about a night out.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practise listening for gist in the context of the conversation about a night out.
  • To practice speaking skills in the context of the conversation about a night out.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T. shares slide #1 with three questions: What do you always carry with you? Do you often lose things? If so, what? Do you usually find them again? If so, where? T. demonstrates the answers. T. nominates 2-3 Ss. to share their ideas.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T. shares slide #2 and introduces the main characters, Louise and Angie. T. asks Ss. to guess what the women did last night (had a night out, went to a bar, went dancing, etc). T. shares slide #3 and explains the task: You will listen to the audio once and put the pictures in the correct order. T. shares Google forms in the chat. T. plays the recording. T. reminds Ss to submit their answers. T. shared slide # 4 for OCF.

Highlighting (2 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T. shares some extracts from the listening with the target language (slide #5) and asks Ss. what these phrases have in common. T. elicits the answer. (make guesses/deductions).

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T. shares a Google form and asks Ss to work in pairs and analyze the meaning of the phrases. Ss. do the guided discovery together answering 7 questions. T. sets the time 3 minutes. T. shares the answers and asks if there are any questions. T. then shares slides ##8-13 to clarify the form. T. moves on to pronunciation and confirms, models, and drills it paying attention to the following aspects: - sentence stress; - intonation (falling everywhere); - connected speech (only connecting must've, can't have, might have) Ss. drill.

Controlled Practice (7-9 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T. shares a google form and tells Ss. tohoose the correct modal verbs and fill in the gaps with the correct form of the verbs in brackets. T. nominates one-two students to do the first 1-2 sentences. T. tells students that they will be given 3 mins to complete the activity. T. shares the link to a Google Forms in the Zoom chat. T. assignes Ss. to work in pairs and compare their answers. T. sets the time (3 minutes) T. shares the answers and checks if there are any questions. T. asks the Ss who do they think wrote the note. T. shares slide #17 with the answer.

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T. shares slide #18 and tells Ss. that they are going to make at least two deductions about the present or the past for each picture. T. demonstrates the activity. T. shares the cards and gives instructions. T. opens BORs and monitors Ss. T. sets the time (5 minutes).
