Procedure (43-59 minutes)
Start with a sentence 'Masters of the Universe' and write it on the board. PW discuss this sentence for a few minutes Finally, ask about their ideas.
Show them pictures. Ask CCQs, get the meaning for the new vocab 'Euphoria, Sumptuous, Bonds and Commission' and then write the words on the board. After that focus on its pronunciation and word stress. Euphoria (n) Euphoric (adj) /yuˈfɔr i ə/. There are three syllables in the word and the stress is on the second. The E and U are juncture Sumptuous (adj) /ˈsʌmp tʃu əs/. There are three syllables and the stress is on the first. Bonds (n) /bɒnd/ Commission (n) /kəˈmɪʃ ən/ Crime-ridden (adj) /ˈkraɪm.rɪ.dən/ Handful (n) /ˈhændfʊl/
Give the handout including the reading text. Write two questions on the board before they start reading for gist. The questions are: - What are the Masters of the Universe? - Do you think the man is happy? Why? or Why not? Firstly, ask the sts read questions then read the text quickly to find the answers for these questions. Then tell them to discuss their answers with the person next to them. Finally, do whole class feedback.
Ask them to work in pairs. Ask the students to read the text for a second tine and decide if the sentences are true or false. Also ask them to underline the parts of the text that helped them to answer the questions. Write 1-6 on the board and ask early finishers to write their answers. In feedback elicit the parts of the text that helped them decide.
This exercise concept checks some of the more difficult vocabulary in the text and meaning. In pairs students will find the bold words in the exercise and answer the questions.
Ask the students in groups to pick 6-8 words from the article and write their own summary.
