Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of Earthquakes in the context of Calm, panic, tectonic plates

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Play a video What causes earthquakes? to introduce them to the topic. -Ask: Have you seen an earthquake?, Do you know what to do in an earthquake?

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-Present an image about what to do in case of an earthquake: Stay calm and do not panic. Drop seek cover under a sturdy table or desk. Keep away from things that may break (windows/ furniture). Watch out for falling objects and tall furnitures. Hold on to something until the shaking stops. -Present other image about earthquake safety: Drop!: To the floor on your hands and knees. Cover!: Take cover and cover your head and neck. Hold on!: To your shelter until the shaking stops. -Give each student a drawing about earthquakes to color in.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

-Make a dictation in your notebook of the following words: earthquake, calm, safety, tectonic plates and panic. -Play a game, when an alarm sounds, they must take steps to protect themselves in an earthquake, as we saw in the previos activity: Drop!: To the floor on your hands and knees. Cover!: Take cover and cover your head and neck. Hold on!: To your shelter until the shaking stops. -Comment how you felt when playing the game.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

-In group, play Kahoot about earthquakes, their causes, how to measure them and tectonic plates.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

-Go out into the yard to play a game where three people form a "house" with two of them as walls and one as a tenant. An additional person energizes the game by saying key word like "earthquake", which makes the participants change roles or move to other "houses". Simulating the movements and damage caused by earthquakes. The goal is to switch roles and find a new place in the game. -Provide each student with a test to assess student learning.
