Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of language for making, refusing & accepting offers.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of offering help.
  • To develop students’ listening skills for gist understanding in the context of offering help.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T. shares slide #1 with two questions: If you have a problem, who do you usually ask for help? When was the last time you offered to help someone? What was the problem? Did the person accept your help? T. nominates 2-3 Ss. to share their ideas.

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T. shares slide #2 and asks Ss. to explain what they see in the picture (a woman is sitting on a couch. she looks upset. there might've been a burglary). T. explains the task to the Ss: You will listen to the audio once and guess what happened to Chloe. T. shares Google forms in the chat. T. plays the recording. T. reminds Ss to submit their answers and shares them.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T. shares some extracts from the listening with the target language (slide #4) and asks Ss. what these phrases are used for. T. elicits the answer. (to offer something and to react to an offer).

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T. shares slide #5 and asks Ss what these phrases exactly mean and asks them to match each phrase with its meaning. T. then asks students to pay attention check and clarifies the form where needed (see phrases 1A,B, 2A, 3A). While doing this, T. asks for more examples and notes them down on the board. T. moves on to pronunciation and confirms, models, and drills it paying attention to the following aspects: - sentence stress; - intonation in phrases for making offers; - connected speech (assimilation (would you, let me), linking (it's okay), omission of t (don't), intrusion (no, it's...)) Ss. drill.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T. shares a google form and tells Ss. that they will need to complete the conversation with one word in each gap (individually). T. nominates one student to do the first sentence. T. tells students that they will be given 3 mins to complete the activity. T. shares the link to a Google Forms in the zoom chat. T. assigned Ss. to work in pairs and compare their answers. T. sets the time (3 minutes) T. shares the answers and check if there are any questions.

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T. shares slide #9 and tells Ss. that they are going to role-play two situations. T. shows the cards and gives instructions. T. shares the cards personally with every student so they don't get confused. T. tells Ss that they will have one minute to read the situation first before starting role-playing it. T. opens BORs and monitors Ss.
