Explain to sts that they are going to read about China but first they will discuss 2 questions. " How has China changed over the last 50 years?" What do you think the future for China is ?" - WCFB- nominate some sts to tell the class what they discussed. - Before sts read the text, Pre-teach 3 words: a skyscraper, ( picture- CCQs- which city is famous for Skyscrapers? Are there skyscrapers in Istanbul?" a hut ( a picture) and the phrase " business is booming" ( CCQs: are things going well?)
To encourage sts to read for specific information and to do it quickly, do a scanning race. Distribute HO1 (text) to sts and instruct them to keep it face down. T. reads out numbers and sts turn page over, quickly scan text to find the necessary information. The numbers are: 20 years, 2000, 1993, McDonalds, 60%, 20%, in the next ten years. When a st finds the answer, elicit response and get a full answer.
Sts read the text in more detail and answer the T/F questions form ex. 2C (on HO1) Get WCFB: Get sts to justify thier answers in FB
Get sts to relate topic of text to Turkey. Dictate the following questions: 1. Which place in Turkey has changed a lot? 2. Has Istanbul changed a lot in the last 20 years? 3. What do you think of the present government and their development plans? Get some WCFB and do error correction as necessary.
