Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of pet peeves.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice and clarification of expressions of annoyance or frustration in the context of pet peeves.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will set the timer to 2 minutes. I will share the screen of my PPT slide with a picture of packing tape and ask the Ss to discuss in groups or pairs how the picture makes them feel. Has it ever happened to them? Script: Look at this picture. How does this picture make you feel? Has this ever happened to you? Talk about this in your groups for 2 minutes.

Exposure / Gist Task (6-8 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through listening.

I will set the timer to 2 minutes. Script: Listen to me talk about things that I find annoying. How many things do I talk about? Why do I think they're annoying? Do these things annoy you too? I will play the audio file or say my dialogue about my pet peeves.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

I will share my screen again. I will elicit stress and intonation from Ss for each expression of annoyance. I will chorally drill, then individually drill.

Productive Task #1: Controlled Practice (7-8 minutes) • To provide practice in a controlled setting

I will set the timer to 2 minutes. Script: Now, you have 2 minutes to work individually on the questions I will send in a link in the chat. Then I will send you into BRs to discuss your answers with your groups or pairs for 2 minutes. LINK: https://forms.gle/zFVHJTV4CkQNmsKd8 Can you see the link? When back in the MR, I will elicit 1-2 Ss' answers, then show the responses.

Productive Task #2: Speaking Activity (9-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

I will set the timer to 2 minutes. Script: Now it's your turn. Take 2 minutes to think about things that annoy you and why. What is your biggest pet peeve? What do you do when someone does something that annoys you? Script: Now talk about your pet peeves with your group for 3 minutes. Ask each other follow-up questions like the ones above. Take a screenshot of the questions and useful phrases. I'll give you a warning when time's almost up. When you're back in the MR, I'll put you into new groups in BRs for 3 minutes. I will show Ss the Useful Phrases slide again. Script: Does everyone have the questions and phrases? OK. CCQs: How many times will you do this?--TWICE. I will monitor Ss' language use in BRs to collect errors for DEC. When back in the MR, I will nominate Ss to share their pet peeves. Script: Did anyone have the same pet peeves as someone in their group?

Feedback and Error Correction (4-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

I will write some sentences of examples of good language and errors I observed in BRs. I will elicit answers from Ss, then show the correct sentence.
