B2-B1 level

Materials

Abc Textbook:

Main Aims

  • To provide the learners with functional expressions tailored for offering advice and tips to foreign visitors navigating their country.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice on how to offer tips to foreign visitors through a role-play activity.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show G-presentation with the question "what are some customs you notice in your day to day life". T then shows some examples he notices about customs to provide the Ss with a good context. T proceeds to ask each S and acknowledges their participation afterwards.

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

T shows G-form. T then explains to Ss that they will be listening to 4 people talk about a particular custom from their country and once they have listened to all of them, they will answer the G-form. T plays audio once. T provides Ss 2 minutes to answer. T tells Ss to send their answers and then shows the AK, while also checking for any misunderstanding of the answers.

Useful Language (10-15 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Stage 1: Intensive listening T shares link to jamboard for Ss and screenshares jamboard. Then T explains to the Ss that they need to listen to the audios once more, and that the link to the audio transcript is in the chat. T explains that they need to match the sentences with the correct speaker, T shows them one of the answers. Answers: Speaker 1: "It's quite common to shake hands" and "It might seem rude if you don't greet everyone in the room" Speaker 2: "Generally, guests don't smoke inside the house" and "You should never smoke with young children nearby" Speaker 3: "Always remember to dress smartly" and "These days nobody wants to wear old clothes" Speaker 4: "It's common to go out late here" and "It's not common to party early" T allows Ss to answer the jamboard for 2 min and then T asks the Ss to discuss what they think the answers are. Then T shows answers and proceeds with meaning. Stage 2: Categorise for meaning Screenshare Jamboard. Explain / show that Ss should categorize the expressions according to whether they are phrases that express things foreign visitors (a) should do and (b) should not do. Answers (a) "It's quite common to..." "Generally, people" "It’s (polite / common / important / perfectly ok / normal) to ..." "Always remember to..." (b) "These days, nobody" "Its not common to" "You should never" "It might seem strange/rude if you" Stage 3: Form T shows the G-presentation slide where there are 3 sentences choosen from the audio, T then elicits from the Ss if they notice something common about the structure. T then shows them that there is a common to-infinitive and that its form is To+base form of verb Stage 4 T again shows the Ss the 3 sentences, and elicits from the Ss which words they think are stressed within them, then T shows them that the highlighted words are stressed. Also T explains quickly by first showing how linking (consonant-consonant) can appear and how it makes the sentence more natural. T elicits the other 2 sentences from the Ss and then shows Ss. T acknowledges their effort.

Productive Task(s) (15-17 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

T explains that first they will use the previous language provided and will write down some tips for a foreign visitor, either negative or positive. T tells them that they will have 4 min to write down their tips. Once they are done writing, T explains that they will nowbe doing a role-play activity be sent out to BORs and that they will take turns to act as the guide and the visitor, T tells them that they will have 8 min in total so that they can take turns.T monitors the Ss in the BORs to use for feedback later on. T brings everyone back. T says:"For the following activity I want you to imagine that you are a tour guide in Mexico. You're helping someone from another country find their hotel in Mexico City. Along the way, they ask you for advice(tips) about Mexico, like what to do and where to go. Your job is to give them helpful tips to make their trip better. So what kind of advice would you provide the visitor? I want you to write the tips down in your notebook, here it would be a good idea to look at the Phrases I provided you guys, you will have 4 min." after the 4 min is up "Now that you have your tips we are going to do a role-play, Im going to send you out to the BORS in pairs, and you will take turns being the guide and the visitor, You will have 4 min so try to take turns. If you dont know what to ask as a foreign visitor I have here some questions you could use, I will share the image in the chat. So for example If im the visitor I could ask Do people usually shake hands when they meet in mexico? and the tourist guide answer would be Yes it's quite common to shake hands here in mexico. We want to provide tips to the questions."

Feedback and Error Correction (3-6 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Once everyone is back, T asks one Ss per pair to share what their partners said, T also ask if they noticed anything similar. Once each Ss finishes telling what their partner said, T provides Language FB from that moment and from what the T heard in the BORs. T praises good use and acknowledges everyone for their hardwork.
