Description

In this lesson the students will learn about how to describe a person physically. The lesson starts with a picture with speech bubbles and another speech bubble so they can learn "I have got" and "she has got". They then listen to a dictation and fill in the physical, then they do a a Pictionary game where they practice these forms based on what they have drawn

Main Aims

  • The main aim of this lesson is to enable students to use and understand "I have got" and "she/he has got" in the context of physical description (e.g. I have got blue eyes, he has got brown eyes)

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of Description

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in 1A (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students and create a path into "she/he has got"

Continue on from Candace. Stick poster of woman with speech bubble, leaving gaps in the sentences and extra bits of paper to stick on. Students have to stick the right bits of paper in the right gaps. Demonstrate the exercise first.

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a poster and highlight form.

Teach "he/she has got..." using the poster. Using a similar speech bubble, but with gaps on, so that they can all be filled with "has", so that the form is clear.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Drilling the sentences focusing on the form "He/She has got"

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Hand out a piece of paper with the outline of a face on it, and another paper with the description of their face on it. Students have to colour in the face based on the description given in the sentences.

Semi-Controlled Practice Activity 2B (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

The picture that was drawn by one pair, given to another and this pair has sheets with partially filled sentences. Based on the pictures that they have been given, they must fill out what is true about the person. Peer check in 4s based on the text given to the original group - the second group reads out their answers to the first group and see what is right, and vice verse.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students draw a face for one minute and include all the features they want (at least 3) to describe it. In pairs, once each person has drawn, describe what the other person in the pair has drawn.
