To practice listening for gist and listening for specific information using a text about a planned holiday.
Procedure (39-58 minutes)
Present a photo of a couple taking a vacation and ask questions. What are they doing? They are taking a vacation. What are they going to do on their holiday? They are going to take a tour. They are going to go to the beach. They are going camping. Where are they going to stay? They are going to stay in a tent. They are going to stay in a hotel. They are staying with friends
Students will listen to a conversation between two neighbours, Sophie and Keith, talking about Sophie's holiday this year. Students will be listening to find out: Where is Sophie going on holiday this year? Who is she going with? CQ's for instructions: What are you listening for? FB - check with class for answers.
Students listen to the conversation again, this time looking for the answers to 6 true and false questions. CQ for instructions: What are you listening for this time? T/F Students check their answers in pairs with the person next to them. I will check answers with the class.
I will use the first three sentences from exercise 4b) of the listening exercise, eliciting other examples from the students, and use a substitution table to keep it organized. To check that the meaning is understood I will use the CQ's from my LA sheet. Does the sentence talk about the past, present or future? Future Are the plans definitely happening or are they something that might happen? They are definite. Does Sophie know when she is going on holiday? Yes Has she booked her flight? Yes I will use the sentences on my table to show the negative form and questions.
Students in pairs or small groups will write 6 sentences using the itinerary for Sophie and Rob's cycling tour. Present the itinerary to the students. Read the example given and then elicit another example with the first item on the itinerary. CQ for instructions: What will you do with the rest of the items on the itinerary? Make sentences. Will you work alone? No, work with a partner! Have students read their answers as feedback.
Have students write some yes/no questions using the prompts provided. Remind them of the form of the question that is still on the WB. CQ for instructions What do you do with these phrases Monitor the class closely for understanding of the question form/ The students Students will mingle with their classmates to try to find someone who's answer is yes to their questions.
Students take their questions from the previous exercise and mingle through the class trying to find someone who answers yes to their questions. CQs What are you going to do? Ask questions to find someone who is....... If your partner answers yes do you keep asking them more questions? No If partner say no do you add their name to your list? No
