In this session Ss learn how to write about their talents.

Main Aims

  • To provide process and product writing practice of a Paragraph in the context of Talents.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of Gerund in the context of Talents.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T plays a video and asks Ss: " what did she ask?" Then T shows 3 pictures and asks the Ss: " what are they talents?" ( pictures are from the previous lesson, so Ss should know them.

Exposure & Practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading

T elicits the meaning of the word "title". T shows a picture of a play and its title. Then T asks:" What is the name of this play?" T will show 2 or 3 titles and asks the Ss these questions: Are they interesting? Is it about the main idea or the details? Are all of the words capitalized? what words are capitalized? Then Ss do the task. ICQ : Are you going to Capitalize all the words?

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading

First, Ss read the paragraph (page 90) quickly and choose the best title. T checks the answers. Then T asks Ss to read the text again and put the sentences in order. (1-3) Tips on how to make friends. My talent is … Talking about why his tips work.

Useful Language (3-5 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

T asks the Ss to highlight the examples of gerund in the text. Then T asks CCQs : Is gerund the -ing form of a verb? does gerund function as a verb or noun? Then T provides some useful language that Ss can use in their writing e.g., I am good at ...- My talent is ... - I like ... because-

Productive Task(s) (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

T puts Ss in pairs and then T tells Ss to write about one of their talents, and describe it. Ss should use Gerunds in their writing. T shows the criteria that Ss use in their writing. After Ss are done, T ask each group to check other group's writing to see if the criteria are applied in writings. T asks ICQs: Either/Or Are you going to write about your talents or habits? How many paragraphs? 1 or 2

Feedback and Error Correction (2-4 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

T checks Ss' writings and gives feedback on the part that are good. T should address the Ss' errors and corrects them. T tries to use self correction and peer correction. T assigns Ss to write a paragraph about their talents ( something that is not mentioned in this session) or hobbies at home and they should bring it next session.
