Grade 4 level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide clarification of the possessive pronouns in the context of stationery and favourite film stars
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide practice of questions with whose, controlled writing practice
Procedure (45-59 minutes)
First, Ss study the picture, then they listen to the dialogue while reading it. Then teacher asks some Ss to act out this dialogue. Then the teacher switches Ss' attention to the board where Ss can see a table with some information missing. The teacher suggests filling the missing parts from the dialogue.
The teacher shows a book and asks a question "Whose book is this", and answers it "This is my book". The teacher writes the question and the answer on the board. Then the teacher asks Ss the same question pointing at their personal items and eliciting different forms of possessive adjectives (his, her, our, your, their). Then the teacher switches Ss' attention to the chart on the board and asks which possessive pronoun corresponds to the possessive adjective "my". Then the teacher repeats the question "Whose book is this" and answers "This is mine". The teacher writes the answer on the board. This time the teacher points at Ss' personal items and asks them to use the new structure.
The teacher switches Ss' attention to the board where they can see a question "Whose book is this?" and two answers "This is my book" and "This book is mine". The teacher asks the Ss. The teacher asks students some questions: what is the difference between these two sentences. Do the sentences differ in meaning or only in structure? When do we use possessive adjectives (the teacher elicits the answer "together with a noun"), when do we use possessive pronouns (without nouns). Ss do exercise 8 page 71 in their workbooks paying attention to the form (The task is to correct the mistakes - students are given questions with possessive adjectives, the task is to correct them to the pronouns - example: This is my bread. Where is your? change into Where is yours?
Ss complete the dialogue in grammar books (page 59 exercise 15) changing the phrases written using the pattern "possessive adjective + noun" into "possessive pronouns". The teacher begins by reminding Ss that a possessive adjective is followed by a noun, and a possessive pronoun is not. After Ss complete the task, the teacher tells them to exchange their grammar books with a partner. Teacher reviews answers by calling a pair to read the dialogue. Other Ss check each other's works.
Ss complete the conversations by circling the correct adjectives and pronouns. After Ss complete the statements and questions, the teacher tells them to compare answers with a partner. The teacher checks answers by calling on pairs to read the conversations.
Ss read the text about favourite film star and fill in the gaps with one of the three given options. Then the teacher asks one or two Ss to read the text. Then teacher discuss the questions given below the text with the Ss, explains some things to the students if necessary, discusses possible answers with the Ss (Who is your favourite film star? Why do you like him/her? What does he/she look like? Have you got his/her films on your home computer? What's your favourite film?)
Ss write a short text about their favourite film star using the previous task as a model and the questions that they have discussed as a plan.
