Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of speaking someone for the first time

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of questions when meeting someone for the first time

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher greets students and introduces to topic of the lesson. Teacher has students elicit examples of what is to meet someone, and ask for example students to provide contexts of when meeting someone for the first time

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Teacher has students discuss and come up with example questions for following staments on board: You are in a party and you want to meet someone new. You are in a work meeting and you meet someone new You are in a new job. You meet someone new What do you ask? Writes down vocabulary to correct (1 example after activity and rest end)

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Teacher ask students to show work. As previous stage, corrects errors, and delivers concept of register (formal/ informal). Teacher asks students then to provide examples of things to ask in a formal register 1st time encounter, towards an informal

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Teacher corrects previous register work (1 and errors go for homework). Teacher presents graph, and has students come up as many questions as possible as group, using tools for them to even create (10 min duration) The other 10 mins, students practice in conversation

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Teacher has students show work and provides feedback. Presents errors found during lesson. Helps correcting one and leaves others for homework
