Description

In this session, Ss have a text about climbing Mount Everest. After warm-up, lead-in, and pre-teaching the blocking items, Ss practice skimming and scanning through Reading 1 (gist) & Reading 2 (detailed). Then, T will show 3 pictures and Ss are supposed to create a story.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, detailed and scan reading practice using a text about Everest Expeditions in the context of Journeys.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide speaking practice in the context of creating a story.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T wants to go on a journey. T asks Ss where they like to go. T can show the picture of a volcano or a rainforest, and asks Ss what we need If we want to go there. e.g., a tent, flashlight, GPS and etc.

Pre-Reading/Listening (4-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T pre-teaches the blocking words. T shows some pictures and elicits the meaning from Ss. T lets Ss take guesses. MPF. After MPF T asks Ss to repeat the words. Then, T asks some CCQs in order to make sure Ss understood the meaning of the words.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T writes down 2 T or F questions and Ss should read the text and answer. Ss should skim the text. After giving the instructions, T asks ICQs: Are you going to mark the sentences T or F? Are you going to read the text in details? How much time do you have?

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

After reading the text for the first time, Ss should read the text for the 2nd time and put the sentences in the exercise in the correct order. T asks ICQs: Are you going to put the sentences in order? Are you going to read the details? After reading the text and answering the questions, T can put Ss in pairs and Ss can check their answers with each other.

Post-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T will show 3 pictures and Ss need to create a story related to that (In- pairs). Ss should use the vocabulary they have learned. Then, they should share their stories with the class.
