Main Aims

  • To provide detailed, gist and scan reading practice using a text about Galileo and the steam engine in the context of history

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking or writing practice in a role-play and imaginary situation in the context of history

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Warm-up: 1. Show the picture to your learners 2. Tell them you found a teapot 3. Ask them if they have seen the movie "Aladdin" 4. Describe what a teapot with magical power is 5. Say you had to make one wish and say your wish 6. Ask them what they would do Lead-in: 1. Draw their attention to the next picture 2. Introduce the word "hieroglyphics" 3. Give them some information about how people in Ancient Egypt used to write 4.Write your name with the letters 5.Ask them to write their names as well and show it to their friends

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1.Want them to take a look at the picture of their book, say what they see and what they predict to read 2. Ask them to read the sentences, see the picture and make a wild guess 3. Help them with CCQs, number of letters or with what sound it starts and ends. 4. Provide them with the correct answer 5. Ask CCQs 6. Start drills 7.Write the word 8. Ask them if it is a verb or noun Do each step for every word 9. Ask them the questions about inventors 10. Ask them to answer the questions in pairs 11. Tell them to give you the answers for the next session

While-Reading/Listening #1 (11-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

1.Tell them there are two paragraphs which have no topic 2. Divide into pair groups 3. Ask one of the member to read paragraph 1 and the other one paragraph 2 in 3 minutes 4. Then tell them that their friends can't understand their language so s/he has to share what s/he understood from the text by drawing and miming (Tell them to convey all the information they gained from the paragraph to their friend). their friend has to guess the topic of his or her paragraph and vice versa 5. They give each other feedback 6. They read their friend's paragraph

While-Reading/Listening #2 (3-4 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

1. Ask them to answer the questions at first individually and then in their pairs 2. Check the answers 3. Do the same for the next part

Post-Reading/Listening (10-11 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

1. Make 2 groups of four people 2. Give each member a role: one person becomes Galileo. 'another one becomes the Pope. Next one becomes the judge and the last one becomes one of the jury. 3. Remind them that they can change the real story of Galileo and they should speak as much as they can. Give 5 minutes. 4. Move to the next situation and make them aware of the fact that they can complete the task either through speaking or writing
