TP8 Grammar

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide practice Present Simple and Present Continuous in the context of daily activities, like commuting to work.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice listening and speaking.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher asks students: does the weather cause traffic where you live? (if no answer) have you ever been stuck in traffic because of the weather? Teacher fields answers from a few students to grow interest in the context.

Gist (6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Teacher plays audio track for students to listen to and answer questions on Google Form activity. Script: We are going to listen to an audio clip. It is a news interview of people trying to get to work. Please answer these questions as you listen. How someone usually gets to work and how they are getting to work today. (send link. play audio. share transcript during audio.)

Intensive (6 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Teacher plays audio track again and students use scribble function to mark script, straight line for what they usually do (present simple) squiggle for what they’re doing today (present continuous) Script: We're going to listen to the audio again, while looking at the audio. Use the scribble function to draw a straight line under what they usually do, and a squiggly line under what they're doing today (model while explaining) (assign slides, send link, confirm students can use function.)

Clarification (10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Meaning: Use marker sentence on slide two to point out present simple (straight underline) and present continuous (squiggle underline). Ask students to place definitions correctly. Script: This sentence uses both present perfect and present continuous. I usually take is the present perfect (straight underline) and I am taking is present continuous (squiggle underline). According to this sentence, I would like for you to help me match the correct form to the rule. Form: Use table on third slide to talk about auxiliary verbs for present continuous. Have students assign correct auxiliary verbs to correlating sentence. Script: We use auxiliary verbs to form the present continuous. I'm wondering if you can help me put the correct auxiliary verbs in each phrase. Pronun: Using Slide with marker sentence, have students identify the stressed words. Have students repeat sentences using the stressed words. Show students linking sounds (consonants to vowel) and have students repeat linked sections of each sentence. Have students repeat full sentence after practicing linking and stressed words.

Controlled Practice (8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students work on CP exercise independently for 4 minutes. Teacher then plays audio for students to check answers. Script: Next you are going to complete the sentences on this form, do not hit submit. (model) Type the missing words underneath. We'll take 3-4 minutes for this, do your best. (send the link).

Free Practice, DEC (12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students use A and B slides (assigned by the teacher) to complete questions for the Freer Practice. After they complete the questions, they will be paired together (A with B) to ask each other the questions that they formulated. Teacher will write down sentences for correction during the exercise, and elicit corrections from students during feedback. Script: Now you are going to use your assigned slide, and complete writing the questions listed. Do not answer the question, just write the question. You will have a few minutes for this part. (assign slides). Please write your questions. Now I am going to put you into break out rooms to ask each other your questions. Do you see how each question is numbered? Work through the questions in order by number please. Respond to each other's question, this is a practice discussion. Let's look together at a few sentences I heard you say.
