Description

In this lesson, students improve their writing skills by writing a short postcard. The lesson starts with the discussion about two questions based on a postcard example. This is followed by a discussion about places we visit when we are on vacation. And, the different parts of a postcard. Finally there’s freer practice were students write their own postcards and help their classmates to check if their postcards are in the correct order.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. I will show Ss a picture with many postcards and ask them two questions: 1. Have you written a postcard to someone? 2. From where? 2. I will send Ss to BORs to discuss these questions. 3. Nominate 2 Ss to answer the questions. ICQ’s —> How many minutes do you have? Are we talking about one or two questions?

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

TEXT ANALYSIS - Show Ss your own postcard, then: a) Help Ss identify the different parts of the postcard and… 1. I will show Ss a sample of my postcard sample and I will send them a picture of my postcard in the chat. (This would help them to have ideas on how to write their own during the freer practice.) CCQ’s —> Does this look like a letter? Yes/No —> Is it a long text or a short text? SHORT —> Are postcards shorter than letters? SHORTER, they usually are. 2. I will give Ss the Instruction: Read the postcard that’s on the screen and identify the parts of it individually, you have 2 minutes ICQ’s —> Do you have to read or talk to your classmates? READ Do you have to identify the parts of the postcard? YEs How much time do you have? 2 minutes.

TEXT ANALYSIS - Show Ss your own postcard, then: b) the language that is part of it (ask hem to identify if language is formal or informal) LANGUAGE CLARIFICATION 1. I will ask Ss if a postcard is formal or informal CCQ’s-- > Do we send postcards to our boss or our family and friends? FAMILY AND FRIENDS. Do we talk to friends and family in a formal or informal way? INFORMAL Do you think a postcard is formal or informal? INFORMAL 2. I will elicit the meaning and form: Expression/Meaning - Match the number with the letters (On JAMBOARD) 1. I’m having a great vacation here in Scotland. (C) 2. Productive Task(s) (20-28 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

I will provide a checklist so students can help each other to write their postcards in the correct order. CHECK LIST: * Does the postcard have all the parts in this order?

e) Name of sender —> person who sends the letter
