Main Aims

To provide Ss with practice in skimming for gist, scanning for specific information and reading for detail through a text from a website “Houseswap.com” in the context of houseswaps.
Subsidiary Aims

To enable students to understand and use lexis related to describing 'where you live' To review and extend Ss knowledge of adjectives to describe places and their opposites, and give practice in them.
Procedure (38-47 minutes)
Draw a simple block of flats on the board and point to one and say 'This is my home, it's a flat. Describe it: "It's an old flat. It's in Istanbul. It has three bedrooms. I like it." Say to Ss:"This is your home" and nominate a Ss to describe it. They can make 2-3 sentences. Nominate 2 more Ss to describe their homes. Ask Ss to work in pairs to describe their homes to their partners. Monitor W/C feedback.
Go around the class and say Can I swap my pen/book for your pencil/ mobile? Elicit what swap means. Ask: "What things do you swap with friends?" Elicit meaning of following words by looking at 2 images: 'noisy/quiet, lovely/horrible, new/old, big/small. Writing on board and asking opposites. Model and drill the words. Advise Ss they are to listen to a recording. They will have a hand out with a variation of the recording and they should underline the words they hear. Ask Ss to read the text carefully before playing the recording. Ss can compare their answers with a partner before the W/C feedback. Show Ss the gapped text exercise. Model the activity. Put Ss in pairs give them 2 minutes. Give the handout. Ask the pair to describe their home. Monitor and check accuracy. Nominate 2-3 Ss to tell the class.
Power point 3 pictures ( luxury homes) on board. The whole class to describe them. Ask Ss which one they would prefer for a holiday and why? Write 'Houseswap' on the board. Ask 'What is Houseswap?' Ask Ss to read the text introduction to the houseswap webpage and confirm what swap means.
Ask Student to look at the 6 small photos on page 33 and describe them. Ask them which one they like. Ask "where do you think the houses are?" Ask them to read some of the homes on the website and match each home to a picture (remind them that there is one extra picture) Give the HO's Monitor They can compare in pairs. Check with the W/C
Tell Ss they will have a handout with true or false questions about the houses. Ask Ss to read the text again to answer. T. monitors Ss compare their answers in pairs before the w/c feedback
Ask Ss to work in pairs. ' Which of the 5 homes on the house swap would they like for the holidays and why? Monitor. Nominate 2-3 Ss to for feedback
