In this lesson, the students are going to learn some new vocabularies about the lifestyle of the actor Hugh Laurie.

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about Pessimism in the context of Lifestyle of Hugh Laurie

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of pessimism in the context of Hugh Laurie's lifestyle

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher starts with saying how he feels things are going to happen. Then the students are asked how they feel.

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The teacher is going to teach new vocabularies (e.g. Pessimist, optimist, passionate and reputation) with pictures. Also they will be given some pictures to help with comprehension of the text.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (1-3 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The students are asked "how does Hugh Laurie he feel about the things that are going to happen?" and they have 1 to 2 minutes to check the first paragraph to answer the question together.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (9-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

The Students are going to read the text deeper and answer some True or False questions related to the text. They will check their answers in pairs and then with the whole class.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The students are divided into groups of 3 and are asked to discuss whether they are an optimist or a pessimist and their reasoning.
