Main Aims

  • Students will be able to practice their reading comprehension skills by reading the provided novel excerpt.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will be able to infer certain information through the previously read content and vocabulary.

Procedure

Lead In Activity: Guess who? (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T asks for volunteers to come to the front. T provides cards with the name of one of the Ss. Ss try to guess who is the person they got by describing their classmates' physical features. If there is enough time, the activity can be repeated with another Ss.

Presentation: Predict and brainstorm (5-8 minutes) • To predict the vocabulary from the text.

T provides an excerpt of a novel to the Ss. T gives instructions and 2 minutes to read. Ss read the text for gist. T asks for a lexical field that Ss may found. T gives 1 minute for the Ss to think about it. Ss brainstorm the possible answers. T presents the actual vocabulary to explain.

Language Focus: Matching Activity (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T presents a series of words divided in a set of options, T also presents images related to the vocabulary. Ss arrange the meaning, type of word and pronunciation in the correct way next to its image. Ss drill the vocabulary along with the T.

Controlled Practice: Gap-filling task (7-10 minutes) • To practice the use of the vocabulary in a controlled activity.

T reveals a group of sentences with blank spaces, along with this a bank of words about physical appearance will be provided. Ss fill the gaps with the word bank. T shows the correct answers. T gives feedback if needed.

Freer Practice: Scenario (15-20 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T gives each S an image with different characters. T explains a scenario where all the Ss were robbed and they have to describe the person on the image to the police. Ss have time to come up with a description of the physical features. Ss divide into pairs to share their descriptions. T is the police and asks some Ss to say their robber's features aloud.
