Description

In this lesson, Ss are introduced functional language to refuse invitations. The lesson starts with a discussion about invitations we can accept or refuse. This is followed by a converstation text Ss have to read for gist and learn different ways to refuse invitations during the Language Clarification stage. Then, Ss have a Controlled Practice where they can demonstrate how to refuse invitations. Finally, there's some speaking practice where Ss use the learned useful language via BORs.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of functional language to refuse invitations.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide reading practice for gist.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. I will show Ss pictures of different invitations and nominate 2 Ss to tell the class what invitation they see. 2. I will show Ss 2 pictures about a man requesting/asking to marry him, and another of a woman refusing to marry the man. The exponent I will be using is "I want you to marry me" where students will learn to accept or refuse this particular invitation. I will ask them what the women in the 2 pictures would say asking them effective CCQ's to understand the concept of refusing an invitation. CCQ's --> Is it easy to say NO to get married? Is it easy to refuse getting married? Do you know a nice=polite way to refuse marrying someone? Did you know there are different ways to refuse invitations?

Highlighting (5-7 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

1. I will send Ss a link via Chat that they have to read individually for 3 minutes and try to answer two questions. 1. Where does the conversation happen? 2. Does Jenny accept or refuse the invitations? Link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1orpUyvA7t5xGM9BKj1IgXB2UkY_zkAugBtgDvawrjTI/edit?usp=sharing 2. I will send Ss to compare their answers in BORs. 2 minutes. 3. I will conduct OCFB

Clarification (12-14 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will introduce Ss 4 useful language expressions from a text conversation and cover MAFP as fast and thouroughly as possible. 1. Sorry, I can't. 2. I canĀ“t go, I have to... 3. Maybe some other time. 4. Thanks for the invitation but...

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

1. I will send a Google Forms link via Chat. I will give Ss the instruction so they may complete the task in groups BORs in 5 minutes. Google Forms link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf06_5vgK1N30uTKUSv21GGo-3h3hPrrFGvvY-spo-_h5fMUA/viewform?usp=sf_link 2. I will conduct OCFB to make sure they have the correct answers.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In turns, Ss will have to make an invitation to their peers, inviting them to either go somewhere or do something. I will provide examples: I'm having a party tonight. Do you want to come? Do you want to go to the movies? Can you help me finish my homework? Do you want to go to the concert with me? Do you want to eat pizza with me? (Ss will be encouraged to make any type of invitation) The other Ss will have to refuse the invitation using the 4 useful expressions they learned during class. (Sorry, I can't./I can't go, I have to.../ Maybe some other time./Thanks for your invitation but...) e.g. A student might ask "I'm having a party tonight. Do you want to come?" Another student might answer: "Thanks for your invitation but I'm going with someone else." FEEDBACK and DEC
