Description

In this lesson, the students are going to read for both main ideas and details in the context of animals. They are also going to practice speaking in the context of animal stories.

Procedure

Pre-reading (5-7 minutes) • To set the context

The teacher uses a picture of a pet to elicit the topic of the lesson from the students. Students work in groups to answer a few teacher-created questions about the pictures on the reading page. The teacher monitors the groups and takes feedback from whole class.

Vocabulary Pre-teach (3-4 minutes) • To pre-teach essential words

The teacher introduces new words with examples. The teacher asks CCQs to check understanding.

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To introduce the reading topic

Students work in groups of 3 to match the reading pictures with sentences in exercise 1. Teacher monitors and then takes feedback.

Reading fro deatils #1 (6-8 minutes) • To practice reading for specific information

The students work in three groups to answer scanning questions about all the reading stories stories. The teacher monitors group work and offers assistance as needed. Students check answers with their groups.

Jigsaw (6-8 minutes) • Reading for details #2; speaking practice (productive skill)

Students work in groups of three such that each student has read two of the six stories. Once done, they are asked to tell the stories to their groups. The teacher monitors the group work and encourages more detailed storytelling. Early finishers from each group tell each other the stories they read about.

Post-reading; Productive skill practice (speaking) (5-7 minutes) • To practice speaking and bring the reading topic to life

The students work in new groups to answer teacher-created questions about animals. The teacher monitors and encourages discussions. Early finishers are asked to extend the discussion to include more types of people (please refer to the corresponding task)
