Tense revision
Pre-intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, the students will have a revision of most of the tenses they have studied throughout their course. Although the concept of tense is a matter of grammar primarily, I have decided to use it in speaking and spare the students the burden of doing controlled written exercises. This also means that the feedback part of the lesson might take longer.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a Conversation and dialogue in the context of Speaking about the past and the present

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of tense revision in the context of personal stories and daily life

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

We start with a quick revision of the tenses present simple, present continuous and past simple. Students work in pairs and discuss the functions of these tenses. The feedback is given to the whole class.

Semi-controlled practice (12-15 minutes) • To practice the target language in a semi-controlled way in order to recieve feedback and prepare for the freer task

Students are asked to prepare 6 to 8 interview questions as if they were going to interview a celebrity. They are told to make the questions using present simple, present continuous and past simple. They have 5 minutes to do this task. Next, in pairs, students take turns interviewing each other. Feedback is given on their errors in form and meaning.

Freer Productive Task (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Students work in groups, playing the game "One Lie, Two Truths". One student makes 3 sentences about their life with one sentence being a lie and the other members ask questions to find out which sentence is the lie. The teacher walks around the class collecting output and preparing for the feedback stage.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

The students' erroneous output is put on the board and the students are asked to work in pairs and correct the mistakes. The definitive feedback is provided by the teacher at the end of this stage.
