Description

In this lesson, Ss will learn vocabulary related to weather through a reading passage on fact files about examples of extreme weather conditions around the world. The lesson begins with the reading passage containing the highlighted vocabulary items. This is followed by two controlled and free speaking activities.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of vocabulary related to weather in the context of interesting facts about the weather around the world.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about weather facts around the world.
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of weather conditions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show PPT Slide 1 in three stages. Elicit the S's responses on weather conditions in three different cities.

Clarification (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Show PPT Slide 2. Elicit and write the words on the board. Clarify with visuals and CCQs. Drill the pronunciation by phonemic symbols and stress boxes. Give examples in sentences.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Give Ss the Fact File text. Highlight the keywords by asking them to circle the vocabulary related to weather. Ss check in pairs. General feedback.

Exposure (10-15 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Give them the reading hand-out. Ss read individually and write the answers. Ss check in groups. Show the blank hand-out on PPT Slide 3. Ask Ss to come to the board and write answers. Do a final check with the whole class.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Show the first question on PPT Slide 5. Ss talk about answers in groups. Get general feedback. Write some of the answers on the board.

Free Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with free pratice of the target language

Show the second question on PPT Slide 5. Ss talk about answers in groups. Get general feedback.
