Main Aims

  • To provide specific information and detailed reading practice from a text in the context of friendships/relationships

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide a speaking practice (in the form of Q&A's) in the context of relationships and friendships
  • To provide clarification and practice of vocabulary and phrases in the context of friendships/relationships.

Procedure

Stage 1: Lead in: (4-8 minutes) • To introduce the lesson and pre teach related useful vocabulary/verbs

Using OHP, show students the first slide containing a picture of a young male and an older female (book, page 33). Give students a couple of minutes and have them discuss the question (Ex a, page 32) Tell students that they will first focus on some vocabulary to help them read and understand the text later on Tell students to scan TWO QR codes (WordWall) and ask them to complete the exercises to learn about the vocabulary they're going to see later in the text

Stage 2: Gist reading (3-5 minutes) • To give students main ideas and information about the text

Tell students that now they will skim the first part of the text quickly and answer 4 questions (WordWall) Give students some time to go through the text and answer the questions and then have them check their answers in pairs and then elicit some answers from them.

Stage 3: Detail reading: (12-16 minutes) • To get students to fully understand the text and provide a controlled practice to consolidate it

Tell students that they will have some time to read the text and complete (Exercise C except question 5) Model or demo the first one so that they get what to do Highlight the exercise they will complete. Ask them to check their answers in pairs and then nominate them to get the answers Ask them to justify their answers by highlighting how they found the answer from the text/provide a proof of their answers

Stage 4: Post reading (Speaking activity): (15-20 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Pair students up and tell them that they will now have a speaking activity to use the vocabulary they learned earlier. Giive them clear instructions (along with ICQ's) and hand out the cards containing the questions/prompts Tell them to swap roles asking and answering each other the questions along with follow up questions to maximize their speaking/practice time Monitor and observe for errors and if time, give w/c FB or delayed error correction.
