Description

In this lesson students will be exposed to comparative forms of adjectives through a reading, 'Living With The Enemy.' Students will skim the article to complete an activity in which they will identify the comparative forms employed 6a5a including more/less, than, as.... We will identify instances of TL review the grammatical rules for using the TL comparative forms of adjectives. By the end of the lesson we will be try to have sts productively using TL forming their own comparisons...

Materials

Main Aims

  • The class aspires to instill in sts the knowledge of assembling comparative forms of adjectives -er suffixes, including the irregular spellings, than, as, more/less

Subsidiary Aims

  • Sts will be able to employ reading strategies of scanning to look for comparatives and employ them in controlled blank filling task

Procedure

Introduce the task, apologize for what they are about to experience, then delve into the task (18-23 minutes) • I aim to have students read the article in pairs and discuss the questions to find the answers

5a. I will hand out the HO and instruct students to work with pairs to find the answers. I will walk around and monitor while Sts are completing the task. I will project the reading on the board and elicit from them the answers, marking them as we progress through the reading. 5b. Advance slide, 'than' is the answer, see if sts can provide it correctly. 5c. CCQ, ask if a lot and a bit are similar 5d. see if students can gather from the reading what the answers are, for d)3 we use the adjective and not the comparative form, happy not happier with as ___ as

Listening exercise (5-6 minutes) • Have sts recognize stress placement and how to pronounce the text

Advance the slide to the the audio text, Play the audio, ask students to repeat highlighting 'than' and 'as' as unstressed and weakly pronounced.

Gap-filling exercise (6-10 minutes) • Have students be able to complete the task, by saving enough time to answer the questions and check the correct answer with their pairs

Preteach report-define it for them. Have students attempt to complete the exercise on their own. Students will reflect on who they would like to live with, Carol or Beth, (Beth). check the answers with the class.

Gap-filling exercise (6-10 minutes) • Have students be able to complete the task, by saving enough time to answer the questions and check the correct answer with their pairs
