Passive Voice

Description

In this lesson, students will be able to revise present and past forms of passive voice and learn and use progressive and perfect aspect of Passive Voice. The teacher asks students to answer the quiz questions in pairs. The teacher will elicit the answers and show the correct answers on PPT. The teacher will elicit different forms of passive sentences from the quiz and present the passive forms. Practice 1 will be done by Ss individually and Ss will check their answers in pairs. Practice 2 will be done in pairs. The teacher provides different active sentences to each partner.The pairs are expected to rephrase the sentences given in passive voice.Partners check each other's statements by looking at the cards provided by the teacher. Finally, Ss will work in groups and prepare a speech for the upcoming elections using passive voice

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask Ss what they know about the English language. Ask Ss questions like 'how many people speak English?, 'How many countries is it spoken?' etc. to elicit what they know.

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text

Students are given a quiz that includes some infrormation about the English language. Students are expected to do the quiz with their partners in two minutes. When the time is up, the teacher elicits students' answers and shows the correct answers on PPT.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The T asks the ss to examine two sample sentences in present and past passive taken from the quiz and answer concept checking questions about it on PPT to elicit their previous knowledge on passives. Then the teacher elicits the form of passive voice.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning and form of the target language

At this stage, the teacher shows sentences in present progressive, past progressive, present perfect and past perfect passive sentences taken from the quiz and asks CCQ to elicit the meaning of the senetences.Then T asks the ss to tell the formula for each sentence on the board and the T shows the formulas under the sentences. Thus, the T elicits the structure. Then the ss are asked to state the formula for negative sentences,

Controlled Practice (2-4 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss are given a handout in which they complete the sentences with the correct passive form of the verbs in brackets on their own. Then the answers are checked as a whole class.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

In this activity, students are given a handout in which they see active and passive sentences. They work in pairs and each partner tries to rephrase the active sentences in passive voice and his/her partner checks those statements on the card provided.Then, the other pair does the same.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Teacher puts the students in groups of four. The groups are informed that they represent different parties and are running for upcoming mayoral elections. They pick one member as the candidate and prepare a one-minute election speech as a group about their practices when they were running the municipality in passive voice in 5 minutes. When the groups are done with their preparation, they deliver their speech. Each group votes for a party, but they can not vote for their own parties.
