Present Simple vs Present Continious
A2 adults level

Description

in this lesson SS will be able to differ these tenses, use them correctly + revise daily routine vocabulary and practice translation

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide review, practice and clarification of present simple and continuous tenses in the context of daily routine
  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a ship battle

Subsidiary Aims

  • Accurately identify and distinguish between verbs in the present simple and present continuous tenses. Correctly conjugate common verbs in both tenses (affirmative, negative, yes/no questions). Demonstrate understanding of the use of adverbs of frequency with the present simple (e.g., always, usually, sometimes).

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask SS to guess your fav hobby. Make them create the question "Is it...?" Listen to their ideas. You need to follow them to the "doing box" activity. Tell them that y-day you were watching the final fight between two sportsmen and show the picture (presentation title page).

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To revise rules dna grammar structures

As SS are familiar with Pr. Simple and Pr. Cont separately, you can revise rules, grammar structures and train several examples, making affirmative, negative, yes-no, questions) variations: SS can be divided in teams, like simple vs cont battle

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the tense usage

When you are done with revision structures, ask them to name as many tense markers as they remember for both of tenses. Then show the slide with 1 marker. SS need to name the tense variation: make two corners (blue and red) and place boxers there, SS need to go to the right place Variation: give them stickers, write PS and PC. they will show the correct card for each marker.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Sticking to the box topic, we can ask them the questions. What do these sportsmen usually do? What are they doing know? They will create a sentence according to the scheme: ;) usually V/Vs but now :) is/am/are Ving Two pictures are on the proper slide) variation: it can be done in writing also

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

They will have to open the brackets and use the proper form of the verb. Be carefull, there are some non-continuous verbs, which are also familiar to them. Revise them together

Free Practice (10-20 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of usage pr simple & cont

Now you're also going to have the battle, but not real. You will play ship battle. Give them the clear instruction. they have different characters vertically and verbs horizontally. On your turn, call out a shot by saying a character and verb combination (e.g., she is working out). the proper tense SS choose themselves. number of ship. 1 square=1 ship their location (Each player secretly arranges their ships on their grid, making sure they don't touch each other (diagonally or otherwise) and don't hang off the edge of the grid.) how to answer after any actions: Your opponent checks their grid. If there's a ship at that location, mark it as a hit with a red cross. If it's empty, mark it as a miss with a dot. Announce "Hit!" or "Miss!" to your opponent.
