Our planet. Environment. Past Simple VS Past Continuous

Description

In this lesson, students will continue to get acquainted with the vocabulary on the topic "Our planet". Students will hear and then read the text on this topic and make exercises for the text. They will repeat the rule of Past Simple and Past Continuous tenses. Students will do the exercises separately for each time. Then the students will try to find and tell the difference in the use of these tenses by themselves. After that, they will do an exercise wuth mixed tenses. At the end of the lesson, they will tell a mini-story about how they save our planet.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Past Simple and Past Continuous in the context of planet and environment.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice words and verbs about environment in the context of our planet.
  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about verbs and actions in the context of environment
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of environment.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Greeting the students. Asking how they are doing and their mood, what's new. Students will also ask different questions each other on topics they want. They can also wish smth to each other or ask.

Pre-reading. Listening (8-10 minutes) • To check HW. To provide context for the target language through a text

Ask some students to come to the whiteboard and tell the new word in Russian. Their aim to write in English. Other students on their places should make sentences with this words. After that to ask the question: Why do they go to wildlife park? Switch on the recording twice. Students should give the answer. Read and react, than write True or False.

Reading (5-7 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Students read and react, than write True or False. Find new cords in the text, explain their meaning in English, write down in the vocabulary. Students do the exercise. filling the gaps with these words.

Grammar (8-10 minutes) • Repeating Past Simple and Past Continuous rules.

Drilling these rules, while doing exercises. At first students do it by themselves, than check with others. If somebody makes mistake, we stop, find words, that use in Past Simple or Past Continuous and student tries to correct the mistake.

Making summary with grammar rules (8-10 minutes) • Students try to make summary with Past Simpled and Past Continuous themselves.

Students compare these 2 tenses and try to make the rule when and what tense do we use in the context. If they make right conclusion, they'll do the exercise on their handouts. The exercise is a text with the environmental vocabulary, where students should open the brackets on the appropriate tense. The second task is to describe the picture with new words. This is a pair work. The first student asks a question and the second - answers it.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ask students to make a small-talk about environmental problems, answering such questions: Where would you like to live — in a big city or in the country? What are the advantages of living in the country? What is the main ecological problem in the place where you live? Do you and your friends care about ecological problems? Why? Have you ever taken part in any ecological projects at school? What would you recommend to a person who wants to improve the ecological situation in his/her hometown? Try everybody to answer these questions.
