TP8: Grammar Lesson
Pre-Intermediate level
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide practice for the verb "Used to" in the context of old and new habits.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To put into practice an effective Test Teach Teach lesson plan.
Procedure (47-60 minutes)
T will open the Google Slides presentation and present the following question: "Think of some habits (good or bad) that you used to have in the past, but no longer have. Then, discuss with a partner: 1. What the habit was. 2. If it was bad, how you got rid of it 3. If it was good, how you would like to bring it back into your life." T will give Ss two minutes to discuss this with a partner.
T will present a text in which Ss will have to choose between two different options (usually between "used to" or "use to"). This exercise will allow T to know what Ss are familiar with the relevant grammar rules. T gives Ss three minutes to complete the task. Then, Ss will compare their answers with a peer. T will monitor the Ss. Once three minutes are up, T will conduct a quick correction of the exercise.
T will highlight the following grammatical elements for "Used to" 1) The difference in meaning between "Used to" as an old habit/tendency and "Used to" meaning accustomed to something. 2) "Used to" as auxiliary verb 3) The use of "used to" vs "use to" (depending on the use of verb "do" in the past tense) T will also cover pronunciation and will break down the relevant formal structures accordingly.
T will share a Google Forms quiz with the Ss. Ss will be given three to five minutes to complete the questionnaire. If time allows, T will give Ss time to compare answers with a partner, as in Text #1, before returning for OCFB. If time is running short, T will move directly to the OCFB stage.
T will present Ss with the a slide containing the following instructions: "Complete the following sentences about yourself. (3 mins) Then, discuss your answers with a partner. "1) I used to think that… But now… 2) I used to be afraid of… But now… 3) I used to/didn’t use to like… But now…" Ss will discuss their answers in breakout rooms, before returning for delayed error correction as a group.
