Description

To provide reading practice for gist and detail. The students will start by discussing the stories from the previous listening lesson in pairs. Then any challenging vocabulary will be discussed in terms of MPF so that the ss will have an understanding when they read the articles. The Ss will read the articles and answer the related questions individually. Finally, they check their answers in pairs.

Materials

Abc Elementary Student's Book

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about the real world in the context of news headlines

Subsidiary Aims

  • To understand some key vocabulary terms

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask the Ss to discuss in pairs what they can remember about the stories from the listening lesson. Give them 3 minutes in breakout rooms to discuss.

Pre-Reading (7-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Use google slides to go over words from the text that might prevent the Ss from understanding, and cover Meaning, Pronunciation, and Form. Vocabulary words covered will be envelop, biscuit, and 'sail round the world',

While Reading (Gist and Detail) (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading

Have students look at the pictures on page 52 and have Ss predict in pairs which headlines they think match and then read individually to check. Use Google Forms. Ss check their answers via chat before Open Class Feedback (OCFB).

While Reading (Gist and Detail) (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading

The Ss will read the articles and answer the questions. The Ss will be put in breakout rooms and will discuss their answers in pairs.

Post Reading • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ask the Ss about the text that they read. Ex: What would you do if you won the lottery?
