Main Aims

  • To enable students to understand and use past perfect in the context of creating explanations for imaginary past situations

Subsidiary Aims

  • to enable students to develop their speaking for fluency in the context of creating explanations for imaginary past events
  • to enable students to develop their reading skills for gist in the context of a story about a pretty girl

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Tell students that you are going to watch a video. Tell them that before watching you will show them the pictures and they will try to predict what this video could be about. Show ss slide 2 and ask them to share their predictions based on the pictures. - "Guys, we're going to watch a video but before watching I'm gonna show you some pictures from the video and you will try to predict what it could be about. Any guesses?" Play the video. Ask students if their predictions were correct, what was correct, what was different. - "Were your predictions correct? What was different?" (slide 4)

Test #1 (5-7 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Tell students you are going to show them the short text(summary) of the video. Tell them that there are some gaps and their task is to work individually and open the gaps, choosing the correct option. Give them 5 minutes. - "Guys, I will show you now a short summary of the video. You see, there are some gaps and you have 2 alternatives. Please, work individually and choose the correct option in each case. You have 5 minutes." (slide 5) Show ss the slide with the answers. (slide 6)

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Work with every sentence from the story. Show students the timelines, clarify the meanings using CCQs. Work with MFP (slide 7-11)

Test #2 (5-8 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

(slide 12) Tell ss they are going to check how they understood the rule. Show them sentence halves and ask them to match them. Also tell them they will need to use Past perfect to open the brackets. Tell them to do it individually, give them 5 minutes. - "Guys, you're gonna practise our target grammar. Look, these are sentence halves. You need to match them to make up sentences. Also, you need to open the brackets using past perfect. You work individually, you have 5 minutes." Put them in pairs and let them check the answers in breakout rooms. Ask them to say the sentences aloud. Show them the slide with the answers. (slide 13) - "Guys, now, work with your partners and check the answers. Do not say the numbers, say the sentences. "

Free practice (11-13 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Tell students that they're going to practise target grammar. Tell them that they will have different imaginary situations that happened with them in the past. Tell them they need to be creative and think of an explanation why they acted like that in these situations. Ask them to listen to their partners and then share the funniest story. Provide the example. - "Guys, i will send you the link. When you open it, there will be different cards. 1) Open a card. There is a situation. Imagine that it happened with you. Think of a creative explanation why you did it. 2) Use past perfect for your explanations. 3) Listen to your partner. Remember the funniest explanation. " ICQs Are these real situations? (no) Which tense do you need to use for your explanations? past perfect Compliment students on interesting discussions. Nominate 1-2 students to share any funny stories that they had. Share examples of speech that is good, incorrect, and that can be reformulated. Elicit from students whether each example is correct. Provide corrections and model/drill pronunciation if necessary. (extra)Ask students what they liked about the class. - "Which activity did you like most of all?"
