  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of travel

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Greet the students and ask them how they are doing and what they have been doing lately. Use this conversation to talk about your friend Alecs who is visiting Iran and has no clue about our rules, culture, and manners.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Use the context to ask the students to talk about the following questions. What is necessary for him to know/do? What advice do you have for our visitor? Share your opinions with each other. ICQ: talk to me or each other?

Highlighting (3-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Take notes of some of the students’ answers to use for elicitation. Use the examples from the last section to elicit the meaning of obligation/necessity and suggestion. Write the students' answers on the board in an incomplete way and ask the students to help you figure out the form.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Use students' examples to teach the meanings of should, must, have to, have got to, and ought to. After the meanings are clarified ask the following questions: If I say, "You must wear a uniform.", can you wear a t-shirt if you want? If I say, "You must not drink alcohol in Iran.", can you drink alcohol? If I say, "You should try Iranian foods.", can you eat fast food if you want? If I say, "You should shake hands with people.", can you not shake hands if you want? write one example on the word and ask one student to drill it. You must have a passport. ask that student to write another example and ask the next student to drill and so on. Use the examples to write the form
