Description

In this lesson the students will practice their writing skills using postcards and holiday vocabulary. They will also practice reading skills and forming sentences using "and" and "but".

Main Aims

  • Practice the production skill of writing.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will practice reading and forming sentences with "and" and "but".

Procedure

Lead - in (5-10 minutes) • Set the context and engage the students - pre-teaching 3 vocabulary

Place pictures on the WB and ask students to tell me what they are. Elicit more vocabulary about the word from all the students continuing to make sure all students understand the new words.

Exposure (7-10 minutes) • To provide context for the TL through a text and to practice scanning for important information

Students will read the postcard ex.1b. Students can underline any words they don't know and I will review them later in the class. In pairs students will answer questions ex 1b. FB - if time allows have students read question and then answer aloud.

Introduction to grammar (7-10 minutes) • Draw students attention to the use of "and" and "but"

Introduce the TL by telling the students about calling my mother and telling her about Istanbul. Write 4 examples of my own on WB. **highlight positive and negative clauses** Give HO and review ex. 4a examples

Controlled practice (7-10 minutes) • Controlled practice of TL

In pairs students read postcard from ex 1a underlining "and" and "but". FB - students read the sentences they found with "and" and "but". In pairs students complete ex 6 FB - students read the answers or write them on WB depending on time.

Semi-Controlled written practice (7-10 minutes) • Get students to use the TL with a semi-controlled writing practicing

***Give instructions before HO*** Students will work with a partner to write a postcard to a family member or friend using the phrases provided in ex. 7. (Distribute postcards by colour and get students to find their match and work together if time allows) FB students read their postcards.
