To develop critical thinking and analytical skills through open-ended questions and discussion activities.
Procedure (79-95 minutes)
Present the PowerPoint slide to the students and explain how expressing emotions affects them. Allow the students some time to discuss these facts and the myth in pairs. Then, give them a second prompt that relates to the first one, about feeling guilty for expressing emotions. Encourage them to share their own experiences with each other. Finally, elicit some feedback from the whole class and listen to their opinions.
To pre-teach some words, give them the worksheets that contain two pages of word explanations and examples. Set a timer for the activity and tell the students to look at the words and study them for 3 minutes. Ask the students to put aside these sheets and hand them a crossword puzzle that includes those words. Give them a limited time to do the puzzle, such as 4 minutes. Project the puzzle on the board and randomly ask students to come and fill in the words on the board. After they are all done, reveal the answer on the board.
Give each student a handout with an outline of the lecture. Explain the structure of the lesson. Ask the students to listen and take notes under the corresponding sections and parts. After they listen for the first time, have them compare their notes with each other. Then, give them feedback about the main points and structure of the lecture. Provide them with an answer to the worksheet to review.
To practice listening for details, give each student a worksheet with some questions. Tell them to listen carefully and write short answers to the questions. Play the audio once. Then, let the students compare their answers with their peers. Ask some students at random to share their answers with the class. Finally, show the answer key or the correct answers to everyone.
Ask students to compose 3 discussion questions based on the topics that came up during the listening. The topic for the discussion must be taken from the listening task that they previously did and should be interesting enough to inspire comments and debates.
- Explain to the students that the quiz will test their ability to apply what they have learned in the last three lessons. - Give them the handouts with the questions. - Tell the students that they will only hear the audio once. - Ask them to look at the questions and familiarize themselves with what is expected. - Remind them to take notes on the listening sheets they have in order to answer the questions later. - Play the audio for them, which in this case is a video. - Depending on the situation and the purpose of the activity, ask them to complete their handouts and collect them or display the answers so that they can check their own work.
