TP6: Functional Language
Pre-Intermediate level
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide Ss with functional language practice in the context of planning a holiday.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide clarification on the uses of the modal verb "would" for both questions and answers.
Procedure (33-46 minutes)
T asks Ss to think of three different trips they'd like to take during the next summer holidays. Ss have one minute to think of options before sharing their answers with the classroom.
T will present audio text with the following instructions: "Listen to Andy and Fiona King discuss their travel plans with a travel agent." T calls on student to read the instructions, along with the questions they will have to answer as they listen along. After playing the clip, T will call on Ss to answer the questions and review general comprehension of the clip.
Teacher will conduct clarification (MFP) for the three following phrases: 1) "I'd like to go to..." (Subj. + would + like + Infinitive Verb) 2) "I'd/we'd rather... than..." (Subj. + would + rather + main verb) 3) "It's not ... enough."
Ss will be given 3 minutes to complete an exercise on a Google Forms sheet where they will be asked to correct five sentences, based on what was discussed in the Clarification section. Once those 3 minutes are up, they will have another 3 minutes to discuss their answers with a partner before coming back for OCFB.
T will present the following instructions to the Ss: "Student A: You’re a travel agent. Ask Student B questions to find out what kind of holiday she/he would like. You can use the questions below or add some of your own. "Student B: You are planning to go on a last-minute holiday. Decide: Who you’re going with and for how long. What kind of place you’d want to go to (beach, city, mountains, etc.) [Etc.]" T will share a Google Docs document with them to give them options for hypothetical "destinations" for the holiday. Ss will be given one minute to prepare an answer before being put into breakout rooms . (T will naturally have to assign the Student A and Student B roles before initiating the breakout room session.) T will monitor the breakout rooms to see hoe the Ss are doing with the activity. In the event that the conversation is not flowing, T can ask the occasional question or use the occasional prompt to help Ss keep speaking.
