Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about shopping in the context of different business practices.
  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about shopping in the context of different business practices.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To enable students carry out a deduction activity based on the text they have read about shopping.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead in (1-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows three words on the board but the letters are in mixed order and asks ss to find what these words are : KEEP CUSTOMERS HAPPY. T tells ss that this is the title of text they are going to read.

Pre-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The T makes 5 groups at the beginning of the class and tells ss that each group will receive a photo. Each photo is about one paragraph in the text and ss need to find 2 key words about each picture. T gives ss 3 mins to find the key words and ss write them on the papers that T gives. When time finishes, ss come to board and stick the key words under the pictures. After every group stick their words, T shows correct answers one by one.

While-Reading - Reading for main idea (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and main idea information reading tasks

T tells ss that they will match the main idea sentences with the paragraphs and asks them to circle key words that help them to match these sentences with the paragraphs. She shares the Qr code with them and they do the matching activity in groups on Wordwall.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

T gives groups an infographic to complete with the details of the text they are reading. T asks ss to underline the sentences in the text that each question belongs to. After ss complete the infographic with their partners, they do a whole-class check. T asks each group the answers for one part, which belongs to one paragraph, and they identfiy where they find the answers in the text.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T tells ss that they are going to play a game about the text. The T shows the questions on the board and they play the game. The questions include both interpretation skills based on applying the information they have got from the text and simple information questions based on the facts in the text.

Free Practice Acvitiy (5 minutes) • To enable students speak more naturally and fluently on the theme of the text.

If time allows, T shows some questions related to the theme and asks ss to discuss them in pairs.
