Procedure (37-46 minutes)
The teacher writes the title of the lesson " Going Solo" on the board and elicits meaning from the students. The students then work in groups to answer the pre-listening questions in exercise 1. The teacher asks the students to guess what theme and/or content of the lesson may be. The teacher monitors group work and offers assistance as needed.
Students work in groups to skim the short article to answer the question in exercise two in addition to a question provided by the teacher. The additional question will fall between the two parts of the question provided in exercise 2. The additional question is: What is Ozone? The teacher monitors group work and then gets feedback from whole class.
The students work in new groups to guess which of the provided are possible reasons why Matt left the band. The teacher asks the students to vote for each reason and writes vote numbers on the WB. After that, the students listen to the recording and check their guesses. They check their answers in groups before they can listen again. The teacher gets feedback from students.
The students work in new groups to do exercise 4 by matching verbs from column A with nouns or noun phrases from column B. The teacher writes the 3 new words and their meaning on the WB. They teacher changes the students groups and asks them to check their answers. The teacher takes feedback and writes answers on the WB. The students guess which of the combinations will probably be done by Matt. Students listen to the recording to confirm guesses and check their answers in groups before they can listen again. The teacher gets feedback.
Students work in groups to answer questions in excercise 5. The teacher monitors and offers assistance as needed. The teacher encourages early finishers to expand the conversation by giving them further relevant questions.
Students work in pairs to unscramble the second part of the listening material. Once the students complete the task, the teacher hands out a piece of paper with the correct order of sentences.
