Teaching Practice 2 Ozgur
Intermediate level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide scanning practice using a text about a visit in the context of festivals
Subsidiary Aims
-
To introduce and practice new vocabulary about festivals
Procedure (37-45 minutes)
I will start the lesson with a photo of my little nephew taken on his birthday. The photo will not show much of his surroundings so I will ask the sts to imagine what else can be there. I will build the spidergram according to their answers.
I will try to progress from parties to festivals, eliciting the word "festival" by asking simple questions. Then I will display the picture next to the text on WB and ask them to talk about it. Next, I will show them the questions HO and go over the questions. Then I will distribute them and ask them to think of a festival they know of and answer the questions. A few of them will be asked to share their answers with the class.
I will display 8 photos on WB and distribute them the list of new words, numbered from 1 to 8. I will ask them to form groups of 3-4 and quickly discuss how the words and the pictures match. Then I will ask for the answers and if there are any words they could not figure out, I will explain what they mean. Once all the words are covered, I will ask them to turn the page down and have them try to remember the words by just looking at the pictures.
The sts already have the questions. Before passing the HOs, I will hold one high and show it to them while telling them I want them to answer the same questions after reading the text. I will tell them there may be words, especially some verbs that they maybe don't know but ask them to first try to guess what they may mean. I will be monitoring and trying to lend a hand if they are stuck somewhere. Once they are done, I will give them 2 minutes to discuss their answers with a partner and check the answers with the class.
First, I will show them the HO and explain the exercise, encouraging them to first try to complete the exercise without looking back at the article. If they still have any questions after completing the exercise, I will deal with them. At the end, there will be a discussion about which ones we have here in Turkey as part of our festivals and get them to speak a bit about those.
