Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a how to deal with problems in the context of unexpected situations.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about dealing with problems in the context of unexpected situations.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T starts by asking the ss about the last time they experienced any unexpected situations, and how they dealt with them. - T puts the ss in pairs and asks them to discuss that. - T gives them 5 mins.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

T starts by setting the context of the listening track" Now we will listen to some people dealing with unexpected problems". - T asks ss to listen for the first time to answer EX,1a. (After listening) - T asks ss to check their answers together. - T shows the answers.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

- T introduces the next task to ss. " Now we will listen again to learn the new phrases they used in these situations". - T gives instructions, Listen again and complete the phrases. - T gives the ss 1 minute to read before listening. After listening. - T asks ss to check their answers together. - T shows the ss the answer key. - T highlights the intonation and the use of the phrases.

Productive Task(s) (20-25 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

-T gives instructions for Ex.2. - Now let's see how you react in these situations. - In a group, discuss how would you deal with each situation. - You have 7 mins. - T asks ICQs: - Are you going to discuss any situations or the ones you listened to? the ones in the listening. - How much time do you have? 7 mins. - T gives instructions for EX.3a. , " Read the situations, what might you say in each one from the phrases. / Work alone / You have 3 mins. - T asks ICQs, - Are you going to use any phrases or the ones we listened to? (the ones we listened to.) - Are you working alone or with your partner? alone. - After the task, the T asks them to check their answers together. - T asks ss to choose one situation from the ones they read in Ex3a and prepare a conversation using the phrases. - T gives the ss 5 mins. - T asks the ss to act the conversation out. ( In case there is time left, the T asks the ss to choose another situation and do the same)

Feedback and Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

- T praises the ss' use of the new language and corrects their errors.
