Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about Good and evil in the context of a classic short novel.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Vocabulary and Speaking

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (10-12 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask them about a book they've read recently and if they know any classics then ill give them the hand outs and ask them if they know the title , I give them time to search the web if they do not know anything about the title then ill ask them to tell the class what is the title about in one or two sentences.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-15 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will write the author's name and check if they know anything about him , trying to remind them them the previous lesson about their favorite author then I will tell them the title and ask them to guess what is it about and share their ideas. The next part is about the vocabulary which i will write 5 words on the board but will say nothing about it just to engage them and make them curios.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (15-20 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ask them to take a look to the text and guess what is happening then give them a pair work and let them talk about their understandings then share it to the class. After that ask them to do the task mentioned in the course book for 3 minutes then check the answers in pairs. at the end I will ask them the questions then right the answers on the board. then ask them to do the second task and have another look to the text if necessary.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (20-25 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Now I will ask them to listen to the audio and read the text with more focus while they do they need to find and highlight the words I wrote on the board. After each part I will stop the audio and give them some time to process the text and write down or highlight important details, then do the task mentioned in the course book and at the end check the answers in pairs or groups of four and after that we going to have a whole class activity by checking the answers together. After all of this I will ask them to guess the meaning of the words I wrote on the board and then write the meanings of them after the activity which includes checking the dictionary and a pair work that they guess the meaning of those words using the context.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Start a speaking task and ask them their ideas about the text and if it was encouraging enough for them to read the novel itself. in groups of four ask them to discuss questions mentioned in the coursebook and then pick one person randomly from each group and ask his and his teammates ideas. At the end to test their understanding I will chose one task from their WB and ask them to do it individually then check it together. At the end ask their whole opinion around the lesson and finish the lesson with instructions for their homework.
