Description

In this lesson, Ss will focus on receptive skills of reading and sub skills gist reading and reading for details and the class will have a productive skill of speaking. The lesson starts with a lead in activity and the teacher introduces the topic to the Ss by asking some questions. This is followed by pre teaching necessary vocabulary from the reading text. Then, Ss will answer gist questions about the reading text. After that, Ss will do two post reading activities. The first activity is a vocabulary activity in which Ss will get to know the definitions of some new words in the reading text after reading the text quickly. The second activity is a speaking activity in which Ss will discuss in groups a question, provided by the teacher, related to the topic of the reading text. finally they will answer the reading's

Main Aims

  • To provide scan and detailed reading practice using a text about why negative thinking can be positive

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification in the context and usage of some vocabulary
  • To provide fluency in a class discussion

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher will ask questions related to the animation of SpongeBob SquarePants and the main characters of the story and will explain the main reading words according to the main characters.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The teacher will explain the new words to the students using the PDF file and will ask questions related to the general topic of the reading.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The teacher will ask the students to look at the picture given in the book and answer whether this person is an optimist or a pessimist. Why? Then he will ask questions with short answers from different reading paragraphs and ask them to answer after about 3 minutes in groups. the answers will be checked with whole class.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

The teacher will ask the students to explain the meaning of "defensive pessimism" by reading the whole text. Students will read the text individually and answer the question.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Finally, the teacher will ask the students to answer the questions at the end of the reading and the answers will be checked with the whole class.
