Description

In this lesson ,students will learn about usage of 'used to' via a short reading of history. Students will discuss old habits they had as lead in ,then students will be asked to read the paragraphs and answer two simple questions. after the class feedback, students will be directed the TL through a gap filling exercise. Then they will be guided to discover the meaning ,form of TL via another exercise. after a whole class feedback, students will practice pronunciation of the whole sentences through model and drill. at controlled practice stage ,students will do a matching game and they will check answers with their peers before a whole class feedback. For free practice, students will complete the sentence and share with their peers before a whole class feedback.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of 'used to'. By end of lesson, students will be able to use it correctly.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide detailed reading task as students are exposed to TL.
  • To provide fluency speaking practices of using TL.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

students will be asked to discuss two questions: 1)What was an old habit you used to have ? 2)How did you change it? It is to prepare students for the class.

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students will be exposed to TL in short reading paragraphs. They will be asked to read the paragraphs for gist and answer questions about them.

Highlighting (4-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Students will be asked to do a gap filling exercise to draw their attention to the TL.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

At this stage, students will be given an analysis form to identify the meaning and form of the TL. They will be given time to think and finish the analysis.A whole class feedback is followed. Students will be directed to find out the stress and special pronunciation of TL then.

Controlled Practice (7-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will be asked to complete a matching exercise with TL at this stage. They will finish the exercise individually and check answers with their peers before a whole class feedback.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will be given some prompts related to TL, and they will be given a short 1or 2 minutes before sharing some sentences about themselves with their peers. after the sharing, a whole class feedback will be conducted .
