Description

In this lesson, SS learn about phrasal verbs through guided discovery based on a reading text about school subject preferences. The lesson starts with a discussion of a significant problem identified at school based on students who have registered in several subject courses to attend. SS discuss why it happened by analyzing the comments found in the school blog. This is followed by a jigsaw reading activity. Finally, SS go through controlled, semi-controlled and free practice via a final interview among ss.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of phrasal verbs in the context of under the context of enrolling into different subject courses and preferences at school.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about subject courses in the context of school blog posts
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation under the context of giving advice on what subject course or extracurricular course to enroll into.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T directs SS attention towards pictures on screen and asks: How do the boys in the picture know each other? What are they talking about? How do they feel in the last two pictures? Why? SS discuss in break out rooms. T monitors and helps. SS go through the video. T elicits answers and corrects.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T directs SS attention towards comments from the school blog post. SS discuss whether they agree or disagree with them.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T directs ss attention towards the target vocabulary. SS work on a sorting activity.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T works on meaning, form and pronunciation. SS go through the three stages by participating orally and on peardeck.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

SS choose the correct option to complete different statements. SS then discuss if those ideas are true or false for them.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

SS interview each other and gather information to report it later on.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss create a list of suggestions or pieces of advice as a survival list for choosing electives. SS have to include target language. SS display their production to the class and ask for input on what could work out better for all of them that term
