To provide scan reading practice using a text about daily routines, countries and languages in the context of culture and travel.
Procedure (22-35 minutes)
Begin the lesson with your classroom routine. Remind the students about the essential agreements and ensure they are ready for the lesson; they will need their pencils and notebooks. Start the lesson with a brief discussion about daily routines. Elicit vocabulary using a picture related to daily routines and countries. Ask students about their own daily routines and the activities they regularly do in different rooms of the house. Show a video illustrating daily routines and the concept of time. Pause at various points to discuss the activities shown and elicit more vocabulary related to daily routines.
Show the students a list of daily routine activities and ask them to work in pairs, questioning each other about the time they do those activities. Model the activity with one or two students and check for understanding of the instructions. If necessary, take a few minutes to review numbers from 1 to 12. Additionally, display the vocabulary words on the whiteboard: 'blini,' 'siesta,' 'Math,' 'pretzels,' etc. Discuss the words with the class, ensuring understanding. Encourage students to share if they know any similar words or activities. Afterward, introduce the text, explaining that it's about the daily routines of four friends from different countries. Ask them to predict what the story might be about based on the introduced vocabulary.
Distribute printed copies of the text to each student. Read the text aloud as a class, asking students to follow along. After reading, ask comprehension questions to ensure understanding. Encourage students to underline or highlight the vocabulary words as they read. Discuss key words from the text, emphasizing those related to countries, languages, daytime activities, and nighttime activities.
Divide the class into groups or pairs and ask them to place the words taken from the text in the right place on the board or chart paper. If there is time, you can ask the students to look for more words, or you can give the early finishers a word search activity
Play a game to regain the attention of the students. The game can be about languages and countries. After that, display the list of post-reading questions on the board. Discuss the questions as a class with the students who want to talk or ask them to draw or write down their answers according to their capabilities. Emphasize the importance of understanding daily routines and different cultures. Ask the students to clean up and dismiss the class.
