Present Perfect
Elementary level

Description

Students will learn how to use the present perfect + for and since to talk about actions and states that were started in the past and are still true now. I will use the TL to describe four things I have done and experienced during the last month that are still true. I will have students guess which statement is incorrect about me. Then, we will work on the structure, and students can use the TL to talk about what they have done or experienced within the last month.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Present Perfect in the context of New Experiences

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of New Experiences

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start the class by using the 'Present Perfect' + for and since to talk about what I have done and experienced during the last month that is still true now. I will use the TL to write four things about myself and have the students guess which statement is incorrect about me.

Exposure (5-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

At this point, I'll have the students write two sentences about themselves (one correct and one incorrect) that they have experienced or done within the last few months. They may not use the accurate TL, so I will use their sentences to draw attention to the TL.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

To bring my students’ attention to the TL, I will write one or two of the sentences they constructed in the proper form on the board.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will start eliciting the meaning by drawing a timeline on the board and showing my students what this tense refers to, and I will ask some CCQs to check the students' awareness of the TL. Furthermore, check the students' understanding of how to use 'for or since.' The intonation will be focused on as well.

Controlled Practice (8-9 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

First, I will have students open their books and do Exercise 9B on page 146 for 4 minutes individually. Then, I will have them check their answers in pairs in two minutes. Finally, we will review the answers together.

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The students will talk about what they have done within a few months in groups of four for 10 to 15 minutes. They will be monitored, and feedback will be given at the end if needed.
